Obituary

Clifton Douglas “Doug” Chalk, 86, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully November 4, 2023 at UNC Medical Center. Born in Youngsville, NC to Charlie and Telia Chalk, he was raised on a tobacco farm learning the value of hard work. He applied this work ethic to his love of basketball which enabled him to pursue his passion throughout high school and college which landed him in both Louisburg College and Catawba College sports Halls of Fame. In 1960, he was named Catawba’s outstanding athlete for the year.

After graduating from Catawba, Doug coached high school basketball for 7 years before embarking on a career in insurance with Nationwide Insurance where he spent over 25 years in sales before retiring to his beloved Smoky Mountains over 20 years ago.

He was passionate about sports, especially Duke basketball and the Atlanta Braves and was quick to discuss either with whoever would listen.

Doug was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Dixon and brother, Thomas Chalk.

He is survived by his brother Everett Chalk, his wife Hilda Matthews Chalk,  his two children, Lynne Chalk and Dean Chalk, wife Kerry and grandson, Kyle Simpson and countless friends.
